Keeping your computer’s storage organized is important for maintaining optimal performance. But how often should you empty the trash? Some users wait until their device screams for storage space while others take a more proactive approach with daily cleanups (Some just don’t even care to, like their home spaces until something happens). Bananabin is a new Mac app that injects a touch of fun into this chore with a unique method for reminding you to take out the trash (it is always a kindergarten motivation for the adults to take out the bloody rubbish outside).

Bananabin Uses Animated Flies to Signal Trash Overflow

Bananabin takes a gamified approach to trash management. When the amount of data in your Trash folder surpasses a predefined threshold, the app surrounds your Trash icon with animated, buzzing flies. These persistent flies serve as a playful nudge to empty your trash.

Customizable Trash Thresholds

Bananabin caters to various levels of digital cleanliness with three pre-set trash thresholds:

  • Janitor Mode (10MB): Ideal for users who prefer to keep their trash minimal.
  • The Recycler (1GB): A balanced option for regular trash management.
  • Garbage Hoarder (10GB): Perfect for those who like to hold onto things “just in case.”
  • These thresholds can be easily adjusted from the app’s menu bar icon.

Free During Beta, Paid Version Planned

Bananabin is currently free to use while in beta. The developers plan to introduce a one-time fee for the official release version, though the exact price is yet to be determined.

Minor Bugs and Compatibility Considerations

While Bananabin offers a fun solution, there are a few limitations to keep in mind:

  • Incompatibility with iCloud Trash and External Drives: The app currently doesn’t monitor iCloud Trash bins or folders located on external drives.
  • macOS Compatibility: Bananabin presently works only with macOS Sonoma. Support for the upcoming macOS Ventura is under development.
  • Permissions: To function, Bananabin requires accessibility and full disk access permissions. These permissions allow the app to monitor the Trash icon’s location in the dock and calculate the storage space it occupies.

Download and Try Bananabin

If you’re comfortable granting the required permissions and looking for a lighthearted way to manage your Mac’s trash, Bananabin is worth a try. Head over to the Bananabin website to download the application. An email address is required to receive the download link.
